Abstract

In China, English has become a fundamental subject in primary schools and is becoming more critical. As the first English teacher of students, teachers must also be professionally qualified. The purpose of the research is to investigate the current situation of primary English teachers in China in terms of their professional qualities. A questionnaire survey was conducted in this study to collect the data and 134 EFL teachers from primary schools in a southern city in China participated in the survey. Some conclusions were made based on the data: first, the majority of teachers have received a good education in English; secondly, EFL teachers have solid pronunciation and grammar knowledge; thirdly, most of them have a good command of teaching skills to design and organize the classroom teaching; fourthly, however, their oral and written communication competence need to be improved; finally, teachers lack theoretical knowledge of English and are not motivated to do research.
